The

Center
received funding through the NYS Tobacco Control Program in
2001. The initial project’s goal was to strengthen tobacco
use prevention programming and to reduce youth tobacco use in
the 94 districts in the thirteen county service area of the
Center. In order
to achieve these end goals, the Center used the CDC Guidelines for School Programs to Prevent Tobacco Use
to guide the interventions and work of the grant.
The guidelines set forth by the CDC recommended
addressing the following seven areas: Policy, Instruction,
Curriculum, Training, Family Involvement, Tobacco Cessation
Efforts, and Evaluation.
The
current work plan objective focuses on assisting middle/high
schools to promote and implement a “tobacco- free
environment” through the development of a comprehensive
tobacco-free school policy.
