Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports

 Program Information:

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a school-wide behavior management system. PBIS impacts the entire student body by rewarding positive behavior and establishing a school culture where positive behavior is both expected and taught. PBIS can also be tailored to deal with problem areas specific to a particular school and to individual students through group interventions and individual support plans.

Strengths of PBIS:

  • PBIS addresses the weaknesses and builds on the strengths of your school.

  • PBIS is based on measurable data, making it easy to detect changes and quantify improvement within your school.

  • PBIS changes the existing school climate and culture to develop a more positive environment.

  • PBIS identifies problem areas and trends in student behavior.

  • PBIS is proactive and preventative.

"Results of school-wide behavior systems are encouraging. Research has shown that a school-wide approach using positive behavioral support stimulates appropriate behaviors by all students. One middle school with 550 students saw a 54 percent reduction of office discipline referrals; 300 fights per year dropped to a handful." (http://www.pbis.org/english/Schoolwide_PBS.htm)

For more information on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports please contact Joseph Otter, Regional PBIS Specialist, by phone at (518) 464-3974 or e-mail at jotter@gw.neric.org.

What's New In PBIS? (Postive Behavior Interventions and Supports)

The Eastern Region of the NYS-PBIS Initiative continues to have success with schools implementing PBIS (Postive Behavior Interventions and Supports)!  Schools at the Elementary, Middle and High School levels are reporting improvements in student behavior including decrease in out-of-school suspensions and office discipline referrals.  The Easter Region of the NYS-PBIS Initiative, highlighted on the map shown below, boasts 50 implementing (cohort) schools spread across 16 districts and one private school.  There are districts large and small and include rural, urban and suburban areas.  There are 5 complete districts implementing in the Eastern Region.

The Eastern Reagion TAC (Technical Assistance Center), sanctioned and funded by VESID and the State Education Department, provides training, technical assistance and professional development to cohort schools and districts.  Expansion to new schools is currently  capped as the NYS-PBIS Initiative works on building capacity to take on more schools.

Capital Region BOCES has developed a PBIS COSER service for schools interested in starting PBIS implementation soon.  To learn more about this COSER service CLICK HERE.
